To commemorate the day that she was born
Though Luisa has been gone eleven years now
On this one day she allows herself to mourn
So every year she lights a candle for Luisa

At her collar on a slender silver wire
Hangs a charm Luisa gave her long ago
When at seventeen they made a vow together
Pledged in private, because no one else could know
So every year she lights a candle for Luisa

They each led their lives
As conventional wives
Raised their kids and were contented, more or less
But she wonders if they’d grown up in more accepting times
Could life have been even more blessed?

So this day she lights a candle for Luisa
With a sixty-five year secret and a tear
And she wonders how much longer it will be now
‘Til time stops and they’re together without fear
So every year she lights a candle for Luisa
But in her heart the candle burns all year
